Driver who caused death of pillion rider not NUS student, says university

SINGAPORE: A driver who caused the death of a teenager riding pillion on a motorcycle has never been a student at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the university said in a statement on Tuesday (Jul 1).

Jarrett Tee Lee Kiat had been identified as an NUS student at the time of the incident, in reports on court proceedings based on official court documents.

However, after Tee’s sentencing, NUS posted a statement on Facebook saying that Tee “has no affiliation with this university”.

“There are no records that this individual has ever been or is currently a student of NUS,” said the university on its Facebook page.

The 30-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to jail for five years and eight months on Jun 27 for dangerous driving causing the death of Ms Leann Lim Jia Le, 18.

He had been driving along the East Coast Parkway expressway at speeds of up to 160kmh when he sped up and overtook the motorcycle Ms Lim was riding pillion on.

He then began to play “blocking and braking games” with the motorcycle. After asking his passengers “Do you want to see motorcycle fly?”, Tee side-swiped the motorcycle, flinging its rider and pillion five to eight metres away.

Ms Lim died of multiple injuries from the collision, and Tee said “she deserved it as she come and push my limit”, according to court papers.

US not taking Guatemala lightly ahead of Gold Cup semis, says Adams

Seven-times CONCACAF Gold Cup champions the United States will not take Wednesday’s semi-final against Guatemala lightly despite being overwhelming favourites, midfielder Tyler Adams said. Guatemala, ranked number 106 in the world, have reached the semis of the tournament for the first time since 1996 after shocking former winners Canada 6-5 on penalties, while 16th ranked U.S. advanced for the 13th successive time. ADVERTISEMENT “We know how strong Guatemala is. There’s a reason that they’re in the semi-final, so we can’t take that for granted the opportunity to play them,” Adams told reporters on Tuesday. Adams also said it would be strange to play against Rubio Rubin, who represented the U.S. at youth level before switching allegiance to Guatemala. Australian inquiry finds Indigenous people faced genocide

SYDNEY: European settlers committed genocide against Australia’s Indigenous people, a truth-telling inquiry in the state of Victoria has found, calling for government redress, including financial compensation. In a final report, Victoria’s four-year royal commission said Indigenous people suffered massacres, the forced removal of children from their families and the suppression of their culture. ADVERTISEMENT The findings – presented to parliament on Tuesday (Jul 1) – said mass killings, disease, sexual violence, child removal and assimilation had led to the “near-complete destruction” of Indigenous people in the state. “This was genocide,” it said. Among 100 recommendations, the Yoorrook Justice Commission sought redress for damage and loss, citing “genocide, crimes against humanity and denial of freedoms”. It urged monetary compensation and the restitution of traditional lands, waters and natural resources. The arrival of 11 British ships to set up a penal colony in Sydney Cove in 1788 heralded the long oppression of Indigenous peoples, whose ancestors had lived on the continent for more than 60,000 years. Making up less than 4 per cent of the current population, Indigenous peoples still have lives about eight years shorter than other Australians, poorer education and are far more likely to be imprisoned or die in

2 crew members charged over oil tanker collision near Pedra Branca that killed 1

SINGAPORE: Two crew members on a Singapore-registered oil tanker have been charged over a collision that killed a man on the other vessel and badly injured another. The Singapore-registered ship Hafnia Nile collided with the Ceres I, registered with the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, an African island nation, on the morning of Jul 19 last year (2024).  ADVERTISEMENT Media reports at the time stated that the collision happened within Singapore’s maritime search and rescue region, about 55km northeast of Pedra Branca. The two crew members from the Hafnia Nile who were handed a charge each under the Merchant Shipping Act are: Indian national Soosai Antony Vainer, 35, and 40-year-old Sri Lankan Wickramage Viraj Amila Shavinda Perera. According to charge sheets, Perera was the officer in charge of the navigational watch on the Hafnia Nile between 5.40am and 6am on Jul 19, 2024. In that capacity, he allegedly failed to make “a full appraisal of the situation and the risk of dangers to navigation, maintain situational awareness of the area around the Hafnia Nile and ensure that a proper lookout was maintained”. As a result of this failure, the vessel collided with the Ceres I, causing “serious damage”

Two dead in Spain fire as heatwave scorches Europe

BARCELONA: Firefighters in Spain have said they found two bodies after a blaze in the northeast of the country, which is in the midst of a brutal heatwave. The heatwave across Europe this week broke high temperature records, caused the closure of schools and increased the risk of fire. ADVERTISEMENT Authorities in Spain’s Catalonia region on Tuesday (Jul 2) confined about 14,000 people to their homes due to two wildfires that broke out almost simultaneously in the province of Lerida. In one of the blazes, near the city of Cosco, “two people were found lifeless by firefighters”, the fire and emergency service said in a statement. The exact cause of the fire was unclear, but the service said the recent heat, dry conditions and strong winds caused by storms had increased the intensity of the flames. Catalonia regional president Salvador Illa said he was “dismayed after learning of the death of two people as a result of the fire”, in a post on X. Hours earlier, police in the region had reported the death of a two-year-old boy after he was left in a parked car in the sun for several hours. Spain is in the midst of an intense heatwave,

Japan updates 'megaquake' preparedness plan

TOKYO: The Japanese government said that much more needs to be done to prepare for a possible “megaquake” to reduce the feared death toll of up to 300,000 people. Quakes are extremely hard to predict, but in January a government panel marginally increased the probability of a major jolt in the Nankai Trough off Japan in the next 30 years to 75 per cent to 82 per cent. ADVERTISEMENT The government then released a new estimate in March saying that such a megaquake and subsequent tsunami could cause as many as 298,000 deaths and damages of up to US$2 trillion. In 2014 the Central Disaster Management Council issued a preparedness plan recommending a series of measures that, it was hoped, would reduce deaths by 80 per cent. Australia vows tougher childcare laws after worker charged with child sex offences

SYDNEY: Australia plans new measures to strip funding from childcare centres that fall short of safety norms after a Melbourne man was charged with more than 70 offences over child sex abuse in a case that alarmed thousands of families. The incident has revived scrutiny of Australia’s early childcare sector less than a year after a former worker was jailed for life over the sexual abuse of almost 70 children. ADVERTISEMENT Police said on Tuesday (Jul 1) they had arrested and charged in May a 26-year-old childcare worker from the state of Victoria, whom they identified as Joshua Brown, with the offences involving eight victims aged from five months to two years. On Wednesday, media said police also charged another man, known to Brown, with child sex abuse offences. Both men have not entered a plea and could not immediately be reached for comment. Reuters could not trace contact details for their lawyers. After the accusations, authorities contacted thousands of families linked to the case and advised tests on about 1,200 children to rule out exposure to infectious diseases. Australia’s Education Minister Jason Clare has asked his department to urgently draft new laws to let the government pull funding for childcare centres

Dalai Lama says his Trust will lead search for his successor

DHARAMSHALA, India: The Dalai Lama said on Wednesday (Jul 2) that a non-profit that he has founded will have the sole authority to recognise his future reincarnation, countering China’s insistence that it will choose the successor of the Tibetan spiritual leader. The remarks by the leader, who turns 90 on Sunday, came during a week of celebrations to mark his birthday. There was no immediate comment from China. Advertisement Beijing views the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, as a separatist. The Dalai Lama has previously said his successor will be born outside China and urged his followers to reject anyone chosen by Beijing. “I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue,” the Dalai Lama said in a statement. He added that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the non-profit that he set up to maintain and support the tradition and institution of the Dalai Lama, has the sole authority to recognise his future reincarnation in consultation with the heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions. “They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition … no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,”

How Do You Choose the Right Ejection System for Your Mold?

Industrial Components Large or heavy parts, like machinery housings, often require hydraulic ejection for sufficient force and control. Air ejection is exclusively used in the medical industry.False While common in medical applications, air ejection is also used in other industries for delicate or thin-walled parts. Hydraulic ejection is necessary for large industrial parts.True Hydraulic systems provide the power needed to eject large, heavy parts without damage. What Are the Differences Between Mechanical and Non-Mechanical Ejection Systems? Ejection systems can be categorized into mechanical and non-mechanical types, each with distinct advantages and applications. Mechanical systems (pins, blades) use physical force, while non-mechanical systems (air, hydraulic) use pressure or fluid power, offering different benefits based on part needs. Mechanical Ejection Non-Mechanical Ejection Mechanical ejection systems are always preferable due to their simplicity.False While simple, mechanical systems may not be suitable for all parts, especially delicate or complex ones. Non-mechanical systems are more versatile for various part types.True Systems like air or hydraulic ejection can handle a wider range of part geometries and materials. How Do You Design an Effective Ejection System? Designing an effective ejection system requires careful consideration of part and mold characteristics to ensure smooth operation and part quality. An
